Malta is set to host the first ever Malta Playcon, the inaugural edition of the game development and Esports expo. The event will take place in Malta’s MFCC between the 3rd and 6th of October, the initiative originally launched by GMR Entertainment and supported by GamingMalta and the Parliamentary Secretariat for Financial Services, Digital Economy and Innovation.
The first ever Malta Playcon, a game development and Esports expo, will showcase all the best that Maltese industry stakeholders have to offer, all under one roof, allowing for discussion and engagement around the future of gaming and Esports, and will be an extension to the DELTA Summit, part of the Malta Tech Week taking place in the Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre (MFCC) between September 30th and October 4th.
It is clear that it is Malta’s hope/intention to become the central hub in the Mediterranean and Europe for video game development and esports alike. The Playcon expo will provide a unique opportunity for those in and new to the gaming industry, to learn more about this exciting chapter in gaming, which will undoubtedly bring new opportunities to the Maltese economy and contribute to the development of local economy.
Playcon’s expo will be open to DELTA ticket holders between October 3rd and 4th. Over these two days, hundreds of students of various ages will get the opportunity to tour the expo and learn more about potential careers in video game development and esports. They will get a unique chance to explore what courses are available in video game development by several education institutions and attend coding workshops as part of the EU Code Week.
Playcon will also feature a full-day Game Development and Esports Summit on October the 4th which will include participation by global industry stakeholders like Ralf Reichert, CEO of ESL and Asi Burak from Games for Change. Together with local experts and political figures like Hon. Evarist Bartolo, Hon. Silvio Schembri and Hon. Clifton Grima, GamingMalta will be giving local game development companies an opportunity to showcase their products and promote the industry to those locals interested in pursuing a career in the gaming or esports sectors.
Games like FIFA 2020, Tekken 7, League of Legends, CS:GO, Clash Royale, and Hearthstone amongst others will feature at the first game development and esports expo. With the help of industry names likeESL, GMR, QLASH, MTV, BLAST, and World Pro Racing but to name a few, Playcon will feature a number of tournaments and competitions. It is the hope of event organisers that Playcon will be an educational and entertainment experience for all, including parents and grandparents.

The general public will be allowed to attend Playcon for free at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali on Saturday 5th of October between the hours or 10am and 10pm and also on Sunday 6th of October between 10am and 6pm. The expo will be supported by Visitmalta.com as well as the Maltese Ministry for Education and Employment.
