EA Sports have just announced a new competitive format for the Madden NFL 20 Championship Series. According to EsportsInsider, the upcoming season will include all 32 NFL teams and will have a focus on the connection between the series and the traditional sports equivalent.

The series will be made up of 4 major events throughout the NFL Season and will take place during key NFL season moments including the NFL Kickoff, NFL Playoffs, the Super Bowl and NFL Draft. All 32 NFL teams will be represented at the Madden NFL 20 Championship Series and there will be a new emphasis placed on the connection between the series and the traditional sports equivalent, the NFL season.

So far both Pizza Hut, Starbucks and Snickers have signed on as official sponsors of the Madden NFL 20 Championship Series, the coffee company being the major sponsor for the first Madden NFL 20 Championship Series event, the Madden NFL 20 Classic taking place in the Esports stadium in Arlington, beginning on August 30th.

The other three live events included in the series are the Madden NFL 20 Club Championship taking place between the 18th and 21st of December. The Madden NDL 20 Challenge at the end of January, and the Madden NFL 20 Bowl, taking place between the 23rd and 25th of April. Total-prize pools for the season are reaching amounts of up to $1.3 million USD and are rising.

Competitive Gaming Division Commissioner, Matt Marcou had this to say about EA’s announcement regarding the new format of the series: “Last season was a monumental year for the Madden NFL Championship Series as millions competed and we achieved record viewership. In continued partnership with the NFL and its 32 clubs, we intent to accelerate player and spectator growth by aligning closely with the NFL calendar. Football fandom and Madden NFL engagement feed off each other and we’re confident this connection will further inspire our players and spectators.”

Representing the NFL was Vice President, Head of Gaming & Esports at NFL, Rachel Hoagland who stated the following: “We view Esports as a key accelerant to growing the NFL. It enables new ways for young fans to engage in the sport through Madden NFL competition. Competitive Madden unlocks great potential as the authenticity it provides enhances engagement and the connection between our 32 NFL Clubs and football fans around the world.”

Will there be a noticeable impact this new connection with the NFL? “It’ll be interesting to see how the series performs now that it’ll be closely tied to NFL. Some Esports that are based off of traditional sports don’t tend to mirror their relevant sport at all, but none are yet to really crack the formula and blow up” – our friends at the Esports Insider.
