The Dota Pro Circuit’s biggest event of the year, The International 2019 is taking place right now. Five teams remain at The International 9. Today will see Vici Gaming take on Team Secret, both fighting for their place in the competition.
Friday saw a pair of lower-bracket matches taking place at the backend of the competition here in Shanghai. Eighteen teams have been fighting it out in the quest to become The International 2019 champions. The top prize is currently sitting at a staggering $15 million USD, the total prize pool has already reaching $34,000,000.
Yesterday saw Team Liquid eliminate Evil Geniuses in a fiercely-fought 2 – 0 battle. Team Secret also managed to oust Infamous by the same scoreline. This means Evil Geniuses, who finished third in Pool B and fell into the lower bracket playoffs on Thursday after losing out to OG Esports, will receive a prize of $1.19 million, Infamous bringing home a respectable $848,410.
Team Liquid awaits the winner of today’s game between Vici Gaming and Team Secret. The winner of that match-up will move on to face the loser of the upper-bracket finale between OG Esports and PSG.LCD in the semi finals, only one step away from Sunday’s Grand Finale and a life-changing top prize of $15,000,000 USD.
This amount easily breaks last year’s record of $25.5 million USD. It also eclipses the $30,000,000 prize pool at last month’s Fortnite World Cup that took place in New York City. This year’s base prize pool started at $1.6 million USD and has steadily grown by nearly 2000% since then. The prize pool is being collected through donations and crowdfunding and the figure will continue to grow until the event concludes.
